New iPhone 14 Pro Features “Always-On” Display

Long rumored to be an upcoming feature for next-gen iPhones, Bloomberg’s Mark Gurman has claimed the iPhone 14 Pro will finally get an always-on display and it’ll be used to show “weather, calendars, stocks, activities and other data” on the lock screen, with a low refresh rate helping preserve battery life.

Seems like these rumours are quite true when it comes to the new display which not is not only going to have a new design but also supports the always-on mode. The revamped iOS 16 lock screen previewed by Apple in June seems to set the stage for this feature, which had several references to always-on mode. The wallpapers have also been updated to take advantage of this new technology.

What is “always-on” display?

If you are not familiar with this feature of “always-on” display, then you must know that this is a technology which keeps showing some information like a clock etc on the display screen without much consumption of the battery. Many Android phones already have this feature and Apple Watch Series 5 already have this technology.

Confirmation of Rumours

As mentioned above that even before WWDC 2022, Bloomberg’s Mark Gurman had already claimed that iOS 16 would be having a new always-on mode, which is a new feature in iPhone 14 Pro models. This year’s new model will reportedly get a new variable refresh rate display that goes down to 1Hz per second which would consume less power than current displays. Another amazing fact is that there has been an internal mode in iPhone 13 that Apple uses to test always-on mode.

The new iOS 16 wallpapers

In Android smart phones the always-on display works almost similar in every phone with a black screen with a clock and sometimes widgets. With a new lock screen in iOS 16 the iPhone will follow similar approach but Apple may be working on something bigger than following the mainstream feature. 9to5Mac has found that the system new wallpapers are now ready for this always-on display mode, based on the internal files of iOS 16 beta 4 and iOS 16 doesn’t use static images as wallpapers any longer. However, the new wallpapers are multi-layered vectors rendered in real time.

Similarity with Apple watch

Now, with regular vectors, the existing wallpapers, such as the default one and clown fish wallpaper which was also recently added, another latest feature classified as “Sleep,” has been added, which has very dark, dim and blurred elements. Wallpapers in sleep state are very much like the Apple Watch with always-on enabled.

When a user turns off the screen of the iPhone 14 Pro, the backdrop will shift to the “Sleep” version which gives the same effect as the Apple Watch on the iPhone 14 Pro. Users can still view their wallpaper even in sleeping mode. The wallpaper will appear with full brightness once the user taps the screen or presses the Power button. The clock and widgets will also be visible when the screen is “off.”

The display screen size of the smartphone is 6.1 Inches and It will provide the user with full HD plus the resolution of 1170 x 2532 Pixels. The Apple iPhone 14’s having a Super Retina XDR OLED Capacitive Touchscreen display that is the latest one and well known for its outstanding results. In the protection of this smartphone, it has a Scratch-resistant glass, oleophobic coating.
