ISLAMABAD: On Thursday, the Federal Cabinet approved the formation of the Pakistan Media Regulatory Authority (PMRA) to merge all media regulatory bodies, including print and electronic media. The Pakistan Electronic Media Regulatory Authority (PEMRA) and the Pakistan Press Council (PCP) would be integrated into the new organization with the formation of the PMRA.
In a press conference, Information Minister Fawad Chaudhry said that PMRA would cover not only electronic media, but also print and cyber media. He said that the government believed that there should be one regulatory authority to take care of all the media and that the same laws should apply throughout.
The minister said, however, that the government would incorporate the opposition and all the bodies representing journalists into the new rules for regulatory body.
Some critics argue that the government wants to rein in the print media after putting electronic media in crisis by reducing the rates of its publicity.
